Krieger, who fell victim to a reckless tackle, will be sidelined for 6-8 months and will likely miss the London Olympic Games should the USA qualify. A date for Krieger’s surgery has not been set.

The U.S. will not be able to replace her on the Olympic Qualifying roster as teams cannot make changes once the tournament has started.

“I feel so unfortunate and I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, especially to have it happen in a match where we were in control,” Krieger said. “Soccer is a funny game and this is part of being an athlete. It’s unfortunate that the timing is really bad, but this team is about way more than one player and I know with all the support from my teammates, my family and friends and from U.S. Soccer, I will come back stronger than ever. It’s going to be a fun year and I’ll be with the team in spirit the whole way, even if I have to be a vocal leader, just sitting and watching.”

With an attitude like this, Kriegers setting herself up for a really good recovery. In my experience with rehabbing athletes, the duration they’re out winds up being largely in part to their attitude. The woe is me type rarely come back 100%, the ‘this is nothing, I’ll smash this rehab’ type usually do more damage trying to come back too early, but the ones who accept whats happened and choose the level headed approach to rehab usually come back better than before. It might not be SOONER, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying this attitude WILL have her back by the olympics. But she WILL come back better. Look at Sue Bird when she did her knee in college, for example. Attitudes make the recovery. And Ali Krieger has always had one of the best attitudes towards life in general I’ve ever seen on an athlete. She’ll let everyone else in the world do the feeling sorry bit, while she quietly works at getting back on the field. The big thing will be WHERE she does her surgery and rehab, however. No doubt FFC will want her in Germany, but family and friends are vital to a successful recovery, so maybe it’s not the best place for it? Who knows. I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. Oh, as an aside - shortest ACL/MCL combined rehab I’ve been involved with: 4 months to physical activity 4.3 months to 95%.
